Becoming a member of Iowa State University’s Live Green! Initiative Team is a unique opportunity to be involved in sustainability on campus as well as take a leadership role in increasing and enhancing sustainability education, awareness and involvement.  Team members in the Office of Sustainability plan campus events, create educational and marketing products, collaborate with campus and community organizations and develop and enhance a diversity of campus sustainability initiatives.

Campus and Community Engagement Interns (2) Application Deadline: July 17

In conjunction with Iowa State University’s Live Green Initiative, the Director of Sustainability is hiring two intern positions focused on increasing campus and community opportunities and involvement in sustainability and living green. Interns work as a team in completing the position responsibilities listed below.

Position Description:

This is a paid internship at $9.50/hour. These positions report directly to the Director of Sustainability. The internship requires a commitment of 15-20 hours/week. Internship length is ~30 weeks, starting August/September, ending May (specific dates negotiable).

Position Responsibilities:

  • Complete event publicity, planning, and implementation for campus sustainability and Live Green! events including Sustainapalooza, National Campus Sustainability Day and Earth Day;
  • Oversee social marketing through Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, WordPress, etc.;
  • Serve as the Live Green! representative at meetings and on organizations including The Green Umbrella;
  • Meet with various student, campus, and community organizations to increase awareness and identify involvement opportunities related to sustainability and living green; and
  • Collaborate on marketing and educational materials design, development, and dissemination (press releases, flyers, brochures, etc. - in coordination with the Marketing and Communications Interns).


Position Qualifications:

  • Must be a currently registered ISU undergraduate student.
  • Must have experience working with volunteers.
  • Must have experience with event planning and management, preferably including Iowa State University affiliated events.
  • Must be a team player and be flexible in terms of offering assistance to other projects and interns when necessary.
  • Experience tabling and/or staffing displays and booths is recommended.

Marketing and Communications Intern (2) Application Deadline: July 17

In conjunction with Iowa State University’s Live Green Initiative, the Director of Sustainability is seeking two interns interested in the opportunity to market and build awareness related to sustainability and living green. Interns work as a team in completing the position responsibilities listed below.

Position Description:

This is a paid internship at $9.50/hour. This position reports directly to the Director of Sustainability. The intern will serve as one of two interns making up the Marketing and Communications Team. The internship requires a commitment of 15-20 hours/week. Internship length is ~30 weeks, starting August/September, ending May (specific dates negotiable).

Position Responsibilities:

  • Completion of a monthly newsletter – including writing, design and layout;
  • Assist with marketing and educational materials design, development, and dissemination (including brochures, event giveaways, progress reports, etc.);
  • Provide content for social marketing through Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Wordpress, etc.; and
  • Collaboration with event publicity (in coordination with the Campus and Community Engagement Team).
     

Position Qualifications:

  • Must be a currently registered ISU undergraduate student.
  • Must be proficient with InDesign and have experience with Photoshop, Illustrator and Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Must have strong writing and editing skills.
  • Must be a team player and be flexible in terms of offering assistance to other projects and interns when necessary.
  • Knowledge of AP style preferred, but not required.
  • Photography experience is beneficial.
  • An interest in service journalism is recommended.

Smart Business Challenge Interns (2) Application Deadline: July 17

In conjunction with the City of Ames Smart Business Challenge, the Electric Services Department and Sustainability Coordinator are seeking two students (undergraduate or graduate) interested in the opportunity to assist Ames businesses taking part in the Smart Business sustainability challenge. Interns work as a team in completing the position responsibilities listed below.

Position Description:

Specifically, these positions will act in a liaison and resource role to businesses participating in the Challenge. The Smart Business Challenge offers Ames businesses to be recognized for their commitment to and accomplishment in multiple sustainability operational areas (including but not limited to energy efficiency, water conservation, waste diversion, and transportation). These positions will take on various responsibilities to support participants in collecting data, completing paperwork, researching opportunities, identifying resources, and connecting with other Challenge participants. In addition, these positions will also offer assistance directly to the City of Ames Electric Services Department related to energy rebates and energy efficiency projects and initiatives.

This is a paid position at $12.00/hour. The Smart Business Challenge Interns will report directly to City of Ames Sustainability Coordinator who is housed in the General Services Building at Iowa State University. The position requires a commitment of 20 hours per week and must be flexible to work some nights and weekends. Position length is for one year. Length of internship and start date are negotiable.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Organize and facilitate Smart Business Challenge meetings
  • Assist with Challenge participant energy audits, follow-up goals and action plans
  • Correspond with Challenge participants through letters, emails, and phone conversations
  • Create and maintain Challenge participant files and spreadsheets to track correspondence, resources, and deadlines
  • Respond to Challenge participant requests for information and resources
  • Assist with the City of Ames Smart Energy rebate claim form intake and processing
  • Complete City of Ames Electric Services air conditioner load control switch inspections
  • Generate various reports and maintaining spreadsheets related to City of Ames Electric Services projects and utility tracking
     

Position Qualifications:

  • Must be enrolled as a student at Iowa State University.
  • Must have experience in project management in a team setting and working with groups as well as one-on-one is required.
  • Research experience and knowledge, as related to increasing efficiency of operations, as well as working with data and spreadsheets is preferred.
