Lawnmower Service Days

Members of the Agriculture Systems Technology Club will hold their annual lawnmower service days. This is a routine maintenance service; club members won't do repairs. Cost is $35 (riding mower $50, weed eater $15). Stash the Trash

Container Bog Garden Workshop

Celebrate Iowa’s marshy roots by creating a unique container garden with boggy, wet plants to give as a gift or to keep for your own home. Choose from a variety of unique carnivorous and water-happy plants as Horticulturist Ed Moran provides all the information you need to design your container and care for it year-round.
All materials will be provided, including soil, plants, top-dressing, decorative stones, and a 12” terra cotta container. Pre-registration with prepayment is required by Thursday, March 30.

Zendoodle Parasol Workshop

Decorate your own functional paper parasol inspired by Reiman Gardens’ spring Conservatory display, Petals & Parasols, with artist and instructor Sara Merritt. Using felt tip markers, learn basic zendoodle techniques to apply to your parasol at random, or work out from the center to create a meditative mandala to shade you from the summer sun soon to come.

Birdapalooza

Sculpting an Icon: Fountain of the Four Seasons 75th Anniversary

Beginning with his portrait sculpture of Meskwaki leader Pushetonequa, followed by his illustrations for the book Cha Ki Shi, and including his Fountain of the Four Seasons, Christian Petersen was often called upon to represent the indigenous people of Iowa in his art. Stuart Walker: Design for Life

In this talk Stuart Walker considers the relationship between creative practice, human values, and the importance of tradition and localization. Through an interrelated process of theory development and speculative design that focuses on sustainable futures, he shows why scientific ways of knowing are insufficient, why technological approaches can only take us so far, and why more substantial, lasting and positive change will depend on a transformation in outlook. He will present his Quadruple Bottom Line of Sustainability based on human values and meanings to show how this can inform practice-based creative research. Through a series of exploratory objects, he demonstrates how these considerations can affect the nature of practice, the nature of our material culture and, consequently, how such manifestations can inform our values and priorities.

Narrative Photography

Have you considered “telling a story” or creating a “narrative” with your camera, and possibly presenting it in a photo book? Join Mark Stoltenberg of Mark Stoltenberg Photography as we cover the creation of a story, how to capture the images, and the various steps involved in creating a photo book. The “narrative” could be almost anything each student chooses: capture a child’s journey through sports, a family vacation, make a memory book for a kid going to college, or create a storyboard for a movie.
You will need to bring the following to each class: your DSLR camera. Beginner photography or instructor permission is the prerequisite for this class. Pre-registration with prepayment is required by Wednesday, March 29.

Ambassador Deborah K. Jones, a career member of the Senior Foreign Service, recently stepped down as the U.S. Ambassador to Libya, a position she held May 2013 through 2015. She also served as U.S. Ambassador to the State of Kuwait from 2008 to 2011 and as Principal Officer at the U.S. Consulate General in Istanbul, Turkey from 2005 to 2007. Additional overseas assignments include posts in Iraq, Tunisia, Syria, Ethiopia and the United Arab Emirates. Ambassador Jones has also served as Senior Faculty Advisor for National Security Affairs at the U.S. Naval War College and prior to her post in Libya was Scholar-in-Residence at the Middle East Institute. FOCUS Grant Show- The 24 Percent

ISU Student and ABC member Zoey Mauck has received a FOCUS Grant for her photography project, The 24 Percent, which documents area women cyclists and promotes their engagement within the bicycling community. According to the League of American Bicyclists, women comprise just 24% of bicycle trips on an annual basis.
The reception for all FOCUS Grant participants will be Wednesday, April 5th, in the Pioneer Room at the ISU Memorial Union, and it is free and open to the public. If you aren't able to make it to the reception, the exhibition will be in the Pioneer Room from March 24-April 24.

Artist Lecture: Joe Patrick and the Architecture of Impermanence

Joe Patrick’s paintings and drawings, while very different in their execution, both examine a transient sense of impermanence. His paintings of the ramshackle constructions found in the Oaxaca, Mexico marketplaces depict structures that exude a sense of the temporary, yet exist to cover and protect the goods and humans below. His drawings are portraits of friends and colleagues and observe a moment in time, which are also temporary, to be replaced by the next emotion and moment.
Join the artist in a gallery walk where he will discuss the impermanence and the parallels found in his paintings and drawings on exhibition in the Brunnier Art Museum.

Native American Representation in Pop Art

Steven Paul Judd is a Kiowa and Choctaw visual artist, filmmaker, and screenwriter based in Oklahoma. His mash-ups of Native experiences and disposable American pop culture are both clever and humorous, offering a unique perspective on and from within Native American culture. His creations include paintings, prints, poster art, photography, and t-shirt designs. Judd has also written and directed a number of films, including the shorts “Ronnie BoDean,” “Shhh!” and “Search for the World’s Best Indian Taco.”

Drawing Workshop with Joe Patrick

For nearly 40 years, Joe Patrick taught drawing and painting in The University of Iowa’s School of Art and Art History until his retirement in 2004, twenty-five years as head of the drawing area of the School. His figure drawing workshop for advanced undergraduate and graduate students was immensely popular.
Don’t miss this opportunity to enhance your drawing skills and learn from this notable Iowa artist amidst an exhibition of his drawings and paintings. This workshop will focus on the figurative subject of heads. Chairs will be provided. Bring your own media and easel if you need one.

No More Prison Labor Rally and March

Students will be meeting outside the library in the free speech zone for a rally and march against Iowa State University's use of prison labor on campus. Prisoners are required to work at ISU moving equipment and assembling furniture for as low as $0.20 an hour. Students believe that it is wrong for ISU to be taking part in this systemic racism, and that our university must do the right thing and end its use of prison labor.

A Doctor to Her Tribe and a Warrior for Her People

Joe Starita, professor of journalism at the University of Nebraska, will discuss his latest book, A Warrior of the People: How Susan La Flesche Overcame Racial and Gender Inequality to Become America's First Indian Doctor. The biography of La Flesche recounts how the Omaha woman earned a medical degree in 1889 - becoming the first Native American doctor in U.S. history - and returned to the reservation to serve as a physician to and advocate for the Omaha tribe. Joe Starita spent 14 years at The Miami Herald, first as the newspaper’s New York Bureau Chief and later as part of its Investigations Team. He returned to his native Nebraska to focus on research and writing on the regional Native American culture and history.

The Colorado River: The Years of Living Dangerously

Anne Castle served as assistant secretary for water and science in the U.S. Department of the Interior from 2009 to 2014. She is currently a senior fellow at the Getches-Wilkinson Center for Natural Resources, Energy and the Environment, part of the University of Colorado Boulder School of Law, and will discuss current efforts to create a more sustainable Colorado River system, including the groundbreaking engagement with Mexico to protect and restore this shared resource. A 1981 alumna of Colorado Law, Castle has worked on water law and policy since the beginning of her career. While at the Interior Department, she oversaw the Bureau of Reclamation, the nation’s largest water wholesaler, and the U.S. Geological Survey.

Planetarium Show: The Afterlife of Stars

G.I.'s and Jews after the Holocaust

Kierra Crago-Schneider is a program officer at the Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. Her work focuses on Jewish Displaced Persons’ interactions with their non-Jewish neighbors in the American zone of occupied Germany. She will discuss the treatment of Jewish Displaced Persons by the Office of the American Military Government, United States and ordinary GIs in Germany over the course of the American occupation and how these relationships changed Cold War history. The Front Lawn Challenge

Over time, traditional home landscapes have become smaller as trends in gardening and interests in plants have changed. Recent research shows that America’s love for the lawn, regardless of region, is “killing” soils, depleting resources, polluting the environment and creating social barriers within neighborhoods. Whether it is the resurgence of interest in homegrown produce, a desire for more ecological responsibility, or a passion make the garden as relevant in the front of the house as in back, many homeowners are re-examining the use of their front lawn, boulevards and terraces. Ed Lyon has developed two different front lawn gardens that provide interesting new lessons he will share by examining issues and looking at examples of gardeners who have converted their front yard spaces for various reasons and purposes.

Workspace Walk-In Craft: Stamped Letter Charms

Strengthening the Sustainability of Agricultural Biodiversity

Karl Zimmerer is Professor of Environment and Society Geography at Pennsylvania State University, where he studies the importance of agrobiodiversity in complex agricultural landscapes. His research focuses on small-scale and indigenous farming in Latin American tropical mountain environments like Bolivia and Ecuador. Not only does Zimmerer map the landscape of biodiversity - for example, documenting 74 different varieties of potato in a single field in Peru - his work aims to identify risks to biodiversity and what they mean for ecological conservation, cultural and ethnic expression, and economic development. He is currently researching territorial initiatives for sustainability, citizen-science seed networks, and links of agrobiodiversity to multi-scale global changes.

The Iowa Department of Transportation is co-hosting an electronic products recycling event. It's open to all local, state and federal government employees. CRT monitors and televisions will be accepted for a fee ($7 for 17" screen and smaller, up to $37 for consoles and projection systems; checks and exact cash accepted). These items will be accepted for free: batteries, cell phones, copiers, CPUs, DVD players, fax machines, handheld games, keyboards, laptops, main frames, mice, PDAs, phones, printers, routers, servers and video games. Paint Your Own Pottery: Tiki Party!

They’ve got luau party music and leis to welcome you to our space. Choose from a number of Tiki cups to paint, or decorate any of our pieces with bright, tropical flowers.
They will show you the basics of painting your piece, and then fire it within a week for you to come pick up. Studio fee is $4 for ISU and $5 for public to attend plus the cost of the bisque you select.
Open to all ages if accompanied by an adult. Grass skirts optional.

Biorenewables Art Competition

Washed Ashore Exhibit Opens

Reiman Gardens will feature 10, larger-than-life sea creature sculptures made from trash collected from beaches to graphically illustrate the tragedy of the pollution in our oceans and waterways.
Sunday, April 30th
Opening Weekend of Washed Ashore™ at Reiman Gardens
9:00 am – 6:00 pm @ Reiman Gardens, 1407 University Blvd, Ames
Washed Ashore™ will be the major annual exhibit for Reiman Gardens in 2017, coinciding perfectly with the Gardens’ annual theme of “water.” Reiman Gardens will feature 10, giant sea life sculptures made from trash collected from beaches to graphically illustrate the tragedy of plastic pollution in our oceans and waterways. Sculptures are up to 12 feet tall and 15 feet long. The exhibit will run April 29 – October 31, 2017.
IMPACT
Marine debris is a planet-wide problem. Approximately 300 million pounds of plastic is produced globally each year and less than 10% of that is recycled. Much of it ends up in the ocean. This exhibit is a wake-up call for all of us, whether we live near the ocean or in the heart of the Midwest. We are all effected by water pollution, not only from trash that is thrown into the oceans, but also into our own Iowa rivers and streams.
Reiman Gardens will be the first public gardens in the entire country to host this colorful, garbage-to-art exhibit, joining the ranks of the Smithsonian, National Zoo, Denver Zoo, SeaWorld Parks, the San Francisco Zoo and more!
Needle Felting Workshop

Learn to make a small fiber “painting” from wool roving, with fiber artist and instructor, Betty Chamness Trost. The beautiful art of needle felting uses a sharp needle to agitate wool, making the fibers “stick” together – resulting in luscious landscapes of color and shape. Practice this extraordinary technique and take home your very own miniature fiber wall hanging. All materials provided.
Pre-registration with payment is required by Monday, April 24.
