Red Cross Digital Volunteers use their social media skill set to help maintain and amplify the Red Cross message, as well as help community members, on social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn. Digital Volunteers may be trained to help with tasks like social care, social monitoring and content creation, and they may be asked to post from personal or regional social media accounts.
Food Pantry/Family Development Assistance

Volunteers at MICA's Family Development office primarily help with the food pantry - everything from receiving and tracking donations to sorting and packing them into food boxes ready for different sized families to pick up. Some volunteers also help at the front desk with answering the phone, greeting visitors, scheduling appointments,giving out food boxes,and helping connect families with the appropriate staff person for their question. Volunteers are able to assist as their time allows!

Mustard Seed Community Farm is looking for 2-3 volunteers to help with outside planting tasks on Tuesday or Friday afternoons. The Iowa DNR fisheries will be stocking approximately 2,000 rainbow trout in the north lake of Ada Hayden Heritage Park. The stocking of trout at Ada Hayden Heritage Park has been taking place for more than 10 years, and the goal of the stocking is to provide opportunities for individuals to catch trout who may not have the opportunity to travel to northeast Iowa to discover trout fishing. By understanding the neurobiological basis of trauma, early childhood professionals will be uniquely positioned to provide trauma-informed care that is developmentally appropriate and fosters resilience. Understanding the emotional regulation and stress response systems provides an evidence base for trauma informed care. Despite his love for science, Dr. Ramos was drawn to the underlying social infrastructure and policies that ultimately influenced health outcomes for individuals and communities. As a result, following defense of his PhD, Ed began his federal service as a legislative fellow and legislative assistant, advising then-U.S. Senator Barack Obama on health and science policy. His time on Capitol Hill speaking with and listening to constituents laid the groundwork that guides his work to this day seeking to improve health for all. His lecture, Leveling the Playing Field in Digital Clinical Trials provides a new paradigm toward the continued advance of digital health technologies.

Sarah Vogel is an attorney, advocate, and author of The Farmer’s Lawyer, a memoir about her landmark class action lawsuit, Coleman v. Block. Vogel brought the historic case against the federal government on behalf of 240,000 family farmers facing foreclosure during the 1980s farm crisis. Vogel served two terms as North Dakota Commissioner of Agriculture, and was the first woman in U.S. history to be elected to this position. Since its publication, The Farmer’s Lawyer has been shortlisted for the Reading the West Award and was named as an honoree for The Society of Midland Authors Award.

Kainalu is a psychedelic funk project by multi-instrumentalist and producer Trent Prall. Drawing influence from modern psychedelia and classic motown artists he grew up listening to, Kainalu’s unique sound has gained international appeal. Kainalu’s core is rooted in Prall’s Japanese-Hawaiian heritage; the word roughly translates to ocean waves, but more personally the concept of the ocean rising and breaking down the islands through time and the impermanence of life. Ames Repair Café volunteers have partnered with the Ames Resource Recovery Plant to promote waste reduction by repairing rather than replacing items that no longer function properly. The repairs are offered at no charge. The Ames Repair Café Team is an all-volunteer group with various repair skills. Some items the volunteers are prepared to work on include clothing, jewelry, musical instruments, computers, furniture, bicycles, wheelchairs, AV equipment, and small appliances, motors, and combustion engines. Participants are expected to bring their items to the library and remain with them throughout the repair process. If volunteers are unable to fix the item or if parts are required, the volunteers will assist in finding a local repair shop. If participants have replacement parts, they should bring them with the item. Volunteers also will focus on sharing basic maintenance tips.

Here's a list of needed pantry items, including the 12 most in-demand products: peanut butter, cereal, canned chunky soups, mac and cheese, dry pasta, pasta sauce, canned fruit and vegetables, canned chicken and tuna, beans (chili, black, brown), rice, hand soap and paper towels. Cash donations can be made by check, cash or Venmo and will go straight to the food pantries. Donations will be shared with The Shop, Sloss House and Bone Appetite (Veterinary Medicine) food pantries on campus and more than a dozen local pantries.

The annual Out of the Darkness Iowa State University Walk supports the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s education and support programs and its goal to reduce the annual U.S. rate of suicide 20% by the year 2025. The walk will include a kick off with personal sharing. Create a walking team, register to walk and donate at www.afsp.org/IowaState.

United Way of Story County's 2023 Live United food drive runs April 24-May 4 and includes more than two dozen campus donation locations. Here's a list of needed pantry items, including the 12 most in-demand products: peanut butter, cereal, canned chunky soups, mac and cheese, dry pasta, pasta sauce, canned fruit and vegetables, canned chicken and tuna, beans (chili, black, brown), rice, hand soap and paper towels. Cash donations can be made by check, cash or Venmo and will go straight to the food pantries. Donations will be shared with The Shop, Sloss House and Bone Appetite (Veterinary Medicine) food pantries on campus and more than a dozen local pantries.

Choose an area of Ames to beautify through litter pick-up as part of the annual Stash the Trash event dedicated to creating a greener, cleaner community! Beginning April 17, clean-up supplies (bags and gloves) will be available for pick-up from the Ames Community Center at City Hall or at the Resource Recovery Plant at 420 E. 2nd Street. Individuals, families and groups can choose a time to pick-up trash, at your convenience, the week before and the week after April 29.

Composed of iridescent exoskeletons and translucent wings, the giant insects of Glass in Flight have been replicated in luminous steel and dalle de verre glass by artist Alex Heveri.
